Are you ready for some serious omm nom nom nom nom..?
Chocolate Banana Malt is soooo good, you'll be in a smoothie-stupor. And the good news is, it's all good for you. It's chocked full of protein, nutrients and happy. That's right, happy.
I have previously spoken about my obsession with raw cacao; containing phenylethylamine, which stimulates the production of serotonin... the happy. Raw cacao also contains caffeine, which is great for a much needed energy boost, along with potassium filled bananas.
So what makes this smoothie malty? Macca powder. The macca root originates from the Andes and is a member of the radish family and has been widely used in Peru, and is thus nicknamed 'Peruvian-Ginseng'. It is rich in B12, and provides plenty of calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorous and amino acids. It works in association with the endocrine system, which stimulates the production of human hormones. As such, it can assist in stabilizing moods for those suffering from anxiety, stress, depression or mood-swings. It can relive menstrual issues, and is said to be a great natural remedy for menopause related hot flushes, but should be avoided if pregnant or breast feeding. Macca can tackle skin issues, like acne and blemishes, decreasing skin sensitivity. It is often used by athletes to increase stamina and is also said to increase libido for both men and women.
However, if you are new to taking macca, go slow. As it does have the ability to change your hormone levels, you really need to monitor your intake and, if you're unsure, check with your nutritionist, herbalist or doctor. I personally find it increases my energy, boosts my mood and increases my motivation. Although I haven't been taking it regularly enough to see any changes in my skin.
Chocolate Banana Malt Smoothie- Serves 1

- 3 tablespoons of raw cacao powder
- 1-2 tablespoons of macca powder (less if you're unsure)
- 8 dates
- 2 teaspoons of chia seeds
- 1 teaspoon of agave (if you need it sweeter)
- 3 tablespoons of natural yoghurt
- 1 cup of almond milk (recipe to come)
- Place all ingredients in the blender, and blend! Voila, super-food Chocolate Banana Malt Smothie!
I had mine with an extra banana and a pistachio crumb. If it's a little too thick, add a little more almond milk. Enjoy!
